What is FDI?
FDI, or Federated Data Index, is a powerful system designed to measure a player’s skill level and performance over time much more accurately than the official rankings. It’s a dynamic, data-driven way to evaluate players. Each player’s FDI ranking represents an estimate of their ability, which is updated each month based on their results. FDI is calculated based on WHO they play, whereas the official rankings are often dictated by what round of a tournament a player reaches or the prize money that they have accumulated. Is it fair that a player goes up 10 places in the rankings for beating a string of lesser players en route to a semi-final? The answer is no! FDI allows us to analyse the true level of ones ability based on who they have actually beaten.
Why FDI matters
FDI rankings provide a robust way to evaluate players and predict match outcomes. By understanding how FDI works, you can:
- Analyse player strengths with greater accuracy
- Identify potential upsets or value opportunities in betting markets.
- Track player progression in real-time, beyond what traditional rankings reveal.
Why you need FDI updates
The ratings gap between specific players allows us to calculate probabilities. For example:
- Carlos Alcaraz has an FDI rating of 2081 on a Hard surface
- Taylor Fritz has an FDI rating of 1981 on a Hard surface
The gap between these players is 100, and we can then use that figure to calculate the player and match probabilities.
Of course these FDI ratings are subject to change based on player performance, and in order for the calculator predictions to remain accurate your calculator will need to onboard the latest data.
